Backup Sump Pump Review - What is Right For You?

What is a Backup Sump Pump?

18 Volt Power Tools

A backup sump pump is another pump that is installed to operate should the primary sump pump fail. Surprisingly enough there are many reasons a primary pump may fail including: electrical power outage, float or switch failure, broken impeller or drive shaft, clogged intake screen.

18 Volt Power Tools

What Factors Should Be Reviewed?

There are eleven major factors to consider when comparing backup sump pumps: power source, charger strength, trigger, dependability, material used in construction, operational capability, dimensions, size of discharge, protection against solids or sludge, alarm notification, and manufacturer warranty.

1. Power Source

The backup system installed should be sourced by something other than electricity.

What are the different types of power sources used?

A Battery provides the power to enable a backup sump pump plugged into it through the use of a wired housing case to perform the pumping cycle for the removal of the water from the pit. Twelve or twenty four volt battery power is used. The voltage and type of battery required varies by manufacturer. Water Pressure provides the power to keep a backup sump pump running. The water used must come from a municipal source and have a pressure between 40 and 100 PSI (pounds per square inch). A portable generator provides power through the conversion of gas or propane into energy. The pump must be plugged into the generator. Automatic start standby generator provides the power when the sump pump is plugged into it.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of the different power sources?

Batteries require monitoring to make sure they are operational in the time of need. Most backup systems have an alarm that lets the owner know when a battery requires maintenance or replacement and is being used by the backup pump. Batteries are rechargeable. Water power requires no batteries and has no moving parts. Operation of watered power systems requires a PSI water pressure between 40 and 100 PSI (pounds per square inch). Private well water cannot be used and the municipal provided water must have reliable water pressure. It takes 1 gallon of municipal water to remove 2 gallons of sump pit water so can be costly to operate. Portable generator: The generator must be placed outside. It must be started manually. Most operate from propane tank. Automatic start standby generator: They are expensive to purchase and install (four to ten times more expensive than battery power) but are very reliable. This type of generator runs off of natural gas or propane tanks and can provide power to multiple household appliances during power failure.
2. Charger Strength

This term applies when batteries are used as the source of power.

The higher the charger strength the faster the battery will be recharged after usage. Charger strength varies from.4 to 20.
3. Trigger

Each backup system has a trigger that activates the non electrical power source to begin operation.

What are the different triggers?

For battery powered backup sump pumps, when the water level raises the float, the battery is activated into operation. For water powered backup sump pumps, when the float raises, a valve allows pressured water to flow down to the pump. The flowing of the pressured water activates the backup system into operation. An automatic start standby generator is activated when the transfer switch senses a utility power interruption. A portable generator becomes operational when a human starts it.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of each trigger?

The transfer switch for the standby generator is the most reliable and quickest way to activate the operation of a backup system. The backup pump is operational as soon as the power goes out. Battery and water powered systems are not activated until the water rises to the height of the float. That means water has already collected in the pit.
4. Dependability

Batteries deplete and loose charge. Municipal water pressure is not constant. A drop below 40 PSI means the backup system is not operational. The float-switch mechanism, impeller or clogging of the backup sump pump plugged into a battery or standby generator source of power could fail. The tether switch is not as dependable as the vertical switch. Dual vertical switches offer twice the reliability.
5. Materials Used in the Construction of Backup Sump Pumps

What are the different materials used?

Thermoplastic: Outer casing is made of a hard, durable plastic. Cast Iron and Stainless Steel: The outer casing and bolts are made of metal.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of the different materials?

Plastic weighs less and is cheaper. Cast iron and stainless steel lasts a lifetime, weighs more and is constructed to handle heavy duty usage. This material is more expensive.
6. Operational Capacity

What are the volumes at which backup pumps can discharge water?

Pumping capacity is measured by number of gallons per minute or hour at a specific rise. Capacity is determined by size of motor and source of power.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of operational capacity?

Larger motors using battery or generator power move more water during operation. Smaller motors move less water during operation and require less battery or generator power. The amount of water moved during operation of a water powered backup sump pump is determined by the municipal water pressure. The greater the pressure the greater volume of water that is discharged. Generally water powered pumps have a lower operational capacity.
7. Dimensions of Backup Sump Pump and Pit

Each backup sump pump has unique measurements.

A sump pit with an 18"diameter basin or larger provides the greatest flexibility in being able to fit a primary and a backup sump pump into the pit. A tether float requires a larger diameter-based pit than a vertical float.
8. Size of Discharge Port Diameter

What are the different sizes?

The size is either 1 ¼ or 1 ½ inches in diameter. Most backup pumps have an adapter to accommodate either size of PVC piping.
What are the advantages and disadvantages of the different sizes?

The capability to adapt to either a 1 ¼ or 1 ½ inch size PVC pipe is extremely beneficial. A size of 1 ½ inches is required to handle heavy volumes of water.
9. Protection against Debris, Sludge, or Spherical Solids

Backup pumps use screens to protect against particles. Those with the additional protection of float cages are built so the cage bottom concaves causing particles to run off.
10. Alarm notification

Each of the battery backup sump pump systems have audible alarms that sound when the battery is activated when backup sump system is running. The alarm also sounds when the battery is discharged.

The Basement Watchdog Backup series also has an audible alarm when the battery fluid levels are low.

11. Manufacturer Warranty

What manufacturer warranties exist?

Some have no warranty Others have one, two or three years
What are the advantages and disadvantages of a warranty?

No warranty may mean manufactures are very confident of product quality. The purchase price of the pump may be higher because the cost of warranty is included. Limited warranties will not pay the entire cost to fix or replace. The length of warranty is usually based on the length of time most of the pumps like it are known to operate without failure.
How Can You Determine Which Backup Sump Pump System Is Best for You?

The following FAQ are provided to help you make your decision.

Are you concerned about other household circuits, experience electricity failure frequently and for long periods of time, and have no ordinance limitations regarding the placement of a 48" (L) x 25" (W) x 29" (H) box outside your home?

The automatic start standby generator can provide the most reliable power for a backup sump pump system as well as other household items. Is your water provided from municipal water source and it is reasonably priced?

Water powered backup systems only work with municipal water source not private well sources. It takes 1 gallon of municipal water to pump out 2 gallons of sump pit water. Are you concerned about backup sump pump float-switch failure during operation?

The Watchdog Big Boy, Watchdog Special and Watchdog Emergency Backup systems have a vertical dual float switch. If one float-switch fails the second one begins operation. The float-switch mechanism can also be replaced without removing the backup pump from the pit. Wayne, Little Giant and Zoeller use vertical switches which are more reliable than the tether floats used by Simer Ace in the Hole and Flotec. Are you concerned with time required to recharge the battery after usage?

The Watchdog Big Dog provides the quickest recharging. It has a 20 amp charger. Little Giant and Simer Ace in the Hole have 2 to 3.5 amp charger. Flotec and Zoeller have 8 to 10 amp charger. Are you concerned about notification of battery depletion or failure?

All major brands include this feature. Watchdog Backup systems provide the most detailed warnings regarding the battery backup system. Is a warranty important?

Wayne offers the longest warranty of three years. The other major brand warranties range from one to three years. Are you concerned about how many hours the battery will run continuously?

The continuous run time for all the major brand battery backup sump pump systems is within the range of six to nine hours. Simer Ace in the Hole runs continuously for six hours; Little Giant runs for nine hours; Wayne, Zoeller and Watchdog run for approximately seven hours. Do you have a sump pit diameter under or over 12"?

The Watchdog pumps have the smallest width (9") and require only ¼" additional for the vertical switch. In most cases backup sump pumps are installed on top of the primary sump pump so size is not as much of an issue. Do you want to exchange a faulty float/switch mechanism without having to remove the entire pump from the sump pit?

The Watchdog sump pump float/switch mechanism is external to the pump so the float-switch can be replaced without removing the pump from the sump pit.
Check Out These Backup Sump Pump Systems Today

Your home is an important asset. Make sure it is protected against water damage. It is cheaper to buy good backup sump pump systems than to clean up after a sump pump failure during a heavy rain storm. Be prepared before those heavy rains come.

What's the Difference Between TFFN, THWN and THHN Wire?

I work at a wire and cable distributor and we get calls like this all the time. There are very slight differences between these wires and almost no difference at all. All three are types of single conductor electrical wire and the four letters are just approvals that the wire went through.

18 Volt Power Tools

THHN wire stands for Thermoplastic High Heat Resistant Nylon which is fully approved and stamped on the wire. THWN is a different approval that came long after THHN and South Wire used to make two separate wires with the different approvals. Now they just make one wire and dual rate it with both approvals. THWN stands for Thermoplastic Heat and Water Resistant Nylon which just adds that it's water resistant. So manufacturers just started to dual rate the THHN wire for both so that they didn't have to run two separate wires everytime.

18 Volt Power Tools

TFFN is only used on 16 and 18 awg wire. It stands for Thermoplastic Flexible Fixture Wire Nylon which is slightly different than the THHN wire because it has a lower heat resistance and it's not good for wet locations. You can't even get TFFN in any bigger awg sizes because they're all dual rated THHN and THWN.

All of these types of wire fall under the electrical wire category and they're sometimes called building wire as well. The reason is electrical contractors use it and most of the time in buildings and homes. Romex is made with THHN conductors and a ground wire so that you can pull two or three wires through a home or building at once. Talk to your sales person about the type of wire you need because they use it and discuss it everyday and may have knowledge that you don't.

Be careful because not all manufacturers will dual rate the wire just because South Wire does. They will look for ways to be cheaper and faster without the thoughts of their customers. make sure you ask if your THHN is dual rated with THWN before buying it.

Electrical Hot Tub Installation

Hot tubs come in various sizes ranging from the cute, two person "Soft Tub" to the very large multiple person party units.

18 Volt Power Tools

120 Volt Units

18 Volt Power Tools

Some of the small tubs have a 120V 20A power requirement, which means that you can just plug them in to a handy receptacle. I have even seen large tubs set up for 120V power supply. When this is done it takes forever for the tub to warm up due to very little amount of power flowing through the heating elements, I do not recommend this way of installation for the large units.

A note of caution here is that the tub will consume most of the circuit capacity so that if you use something with appreciable draw (hair dryer, microwave or other appliance or electric tools) the circuit breaker can be tripped. This is why it is best to run a separate circuit for the hot tub no matter what size it is.

240 Volt Units

Let us start with the two fixed placements.

1) Where is the electric service panel? Preferably the main panel since we will be pulling around 50 Amps of 240 Volt power. It is usually located near a front corner of the house.

2) Where is the hot tub located? Most times this will be located in back of the house.

Power to the Hot Tub

1) Where is the hot tub? Is it on a deck connected to the house or on the ground?

2) Is the house on a slab or is there access under the house?

House and Hot Tub on slab

Let us start with the house and the hot tub on a slab. This scenario tells us that we will need to run the whole power supply line in 1" Schedule 40 PVC conduit in the ground 18 - 24 inches deep depending on jurisdiction. Above ground it has to be in Schedule 80 PVC.

We run the conduit from the main panel down into the ground to the back of the house where we come out of the ground and enter the GFCI disconnect/Spa Pack.

Note: the above is for a surface mounted panel, if yours is flush mounted (or in the wall) then you will need to use two 45 degree sweeps to get into the bottom of the panel. This is quite easily doable, and chalking fills in any excess opening created during the installation process.

The power to the hot tub is required to be Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter protected (NEC 680.22 -A5). This GFCI protection panel (Spa Pack) is to be not closer than 5 feet from the hot tub, yet within site of the unit no gates or walls (NEC 680.24 -B2b).

The conduit then runs back into the ground and out to the hot tub where it re-emerges from the ground. The power feed into the hot tub is usually on the left side of the unit facing the removable access panel. Some units have built in PVC flex conduit leading to the power panel. If your unit does not have the flex already installed then you will need to install some 1" PVC Flex.

Wire selection

Now comes the fun part, pulling in the power wire. Most of the large units require 50 Amps of 240 Volt power. To provide that we will need #6 THHN stranded copper wire. You will need four (4) pieces for each of two runs. From the main panel to GFCI then GFCI to hot tub. Be very careful to measure accurately, Measure from the inside top of the main panel to the trench bottom, the length of the trench, then up into the Spa Pack plus six (6) inches. Next is Spa Pack to hot tub. It is always better to have an extra two feet of wire that you don't use than being 4 inches too short.

The four runs of wire are:

120 V -- Black

120 V -- Red

Neutral -- White

Ground -- Green

The colors are for identification, I do not buy #6 in all of the colors, I use colored coding tape to mark approximately two feet of each end of the wires. Inside of the hot tub control panel they are very good about identifying where each wire goes. It is also time to start filling the hot tub. Now back to the Spa Pack, the red, white and black wires attach to the bottom of the GFCI breaker with the green on the ground lug or bar. The wires from the panel attach to the ground bar (green) neutral bar (white) and the breaker feed lugs (black and red).

We are almost there, now back to the main panel and install a two pole fifty amp breaker (2P50) that is designed for your panel, connect the white and green wires to the neutral/ground bar and the red and black to the breaker. When the tub is full of water then you can turn on the main breaker, the GFCI breaker and start the hot tub from its operating panel. It will take a few hours to heat up. It is fun to check out all of the jets and other features of the tub.

Small 120 Volt tubs

If you are supplying a small tub that only requires a 20 Amp 120 Volt circuit then you use half or three quarter inch PVC conduit and three #12 gage wires, black, white and green. You can also use a standard GFCI receptacle mounted on the side of the house or post within the reach of the hot tub attachment cord.

Raised houses and decks

If you have access under your house and the tub is on a deck you can eliminate a lot of digging by just running the conduit under the house and deck. You follow the same procedure as above only no digging. If there is no flex conduit already installed, I come into the service section directly from the bottom of the deck. Using a 1" 90 degree sweep I determine where I will drill my entry hole, from inside, through the base of the hot tub and connect to the power feed conduit from the GFCI/Spa Pack under the deck. I also do not glue this last sweep until I have pulled in the power supply wires. That makes for an easier pull with less 90's to pull through.

Now it is time to enjoy your work, you did good, celebrate in your new hot tub.

* NEC = National Electric Code which is used by most areas in the US with similar codes in other countries.

Refrigeration Maintenance, Walk-In Coolers and Freezers

Most refrigerators and walk-ins seem virtually indestructible and problem free, but you'll get longer life out of yours by following these safety and maintenance tips. Clean the door gaskets and hinges regularly. The door gaskets, made of rubber, can rot more easily if they are caked with food or grime, which weakens their sealing properties. They can be safely cleaned with a solution of baking soda and warm water. Hinges can be rubbed with a bit of petroleum jelly to keep them working well. Dirty coils force the refrigerator to run hotter, which shortens the life of the compressor motor. They should be cleaned every 90 days, preferably with an industrial-strength vacuum cleaner.

18 Volt Power Tools

Walk-in floors can be damp-mopped but should never be hosed out. Too much water can get into the seals between the floor panels and damage the insulation. A refrigerator only works as well as the air that's allowed to circulate around its contents. Cramming food containers together so there's not a spare inch of space around them doesn't help. Also try to keep containers (especially cardboard ones) from touching the walls of the cabinet. They may freeze and stick to the walls, damaging both product and wall. Use a good rotation system: First in, first out (FIFO) is preferable. Or put colored dots on food packages, a different color for each day of the week, so everyone in your kitchen knows how long each item has been in the fridge.

18 Volt Power Tools

WALK-IN COOLERS AND FREEZERS

A walk-in cooler is just what its name implies: a cooler big enough to walk into. It can be as small as a closet or as large as a good-size room, but its primary purpose is to provide refrigerated storage for large quantities of food in a central area. Experts suggest that your operation needs a walk-in when its refrigeration needs exceed 80 cubic feet, or if you serve more than 250 meals per day. Once again, you'll need to determine how much you need to store, what sizes of containers the storage space must accommodate, and the maximum quantity of goods you'll want to have on hand. The only way to use walk-in space wisely is to equip it with shelves, organized in sections. Exactly how much square footage do you need? The easiest formula is to calculate 1 to 1.5 cubic feet of walk-in storage for every meal you serve per day. Another basic calculation: Take the total number of linear feet of shelving you've decided you will need (A), and divide it by the number of shelves (B) you can put in each section.

This will give you the number of linear feet per section (C). To this number (C), add 40 to 50 percent (1.40 or 1.50) to cover "overflow"-volume increases, wasted space, and bulky items or loose product. This will give you an estimate of the total linear footage (D) needed. However, linear footage is not enough. Because shelves are three dimensional, you must calculate square footage. So multiply (D) by the depth of each shelf (E) to obtain the total square footage amount (F). Finally, double the (F) figure, to compensate for aisle space. Roughly half of walk-in cooler space is aisle space. Another popular formula is to calculate that, for every 28 to 30 pounds of food you'll store, you will need 1 cubic foot of space. When you get that figure, multiply it by 2.5. (The factor 2.5 means only 40 percent of your walk-in will be used as storage space; the other 60 percent is aisles and space between products.)

The result is the size of the refrigerated storage area you will need. For a walk-in freezer, simply divide your walk-in refrigerator space by two. Larger kitchens, which serve more than 400 meals a day, may need as many as three walk-in refrigerators for different temperature needs: one for produce (41 degrees Fahrenheit), one for meats and fish (33 to 38 degrees Fahrenheit), and one for dairy products (32 to 41 degrees Fahrenheit). The walk-in is used most often to store bulk foods. Because this often means wheeling carts or dollies in and out, the floor should be level with the kitchen floor.

This leveling is achieved by the use of strips (called screeds) that are applied to the floor. Coolers don't come as a single unit; they are constructed on-site. The walls, ceilings, and floors are made of individual panels. Wall panels should be insulated to a rating of R-30, which means a 4-inch thickness. They come in various lengths and widths, with 12-by-12-inch corner panels at 90-degree angles. They can be as short as 71?2 feet or as tall as 131?2 feet. The most common type of insulation inside the panels is polyurethane, and the outside walls of the panels can be made of stainless steel, vinyl, or aluminum. Stainless steel is the most expensive, and aluminum-because it's the least expensive-is the most popular choice. If the walk-in is an outdoor installation, aluminum is the most weather resistant.

The installer will be sure the unit has interior lighting. The floor panels for walk-ins are similar to the wall panels. Load capacities of 600 pounds per square foot are the norm, but if you plan to store very heavy items (like beer kegs), a reinforced floor can be purchased with a load capacity of up to 1000 pounds per square foot. The refrigeration system of a walk-in is a more complex installation than a standard refrigerator, primarily because it's so much bigger. Matching the system (and its power requirements) with the dimensions of the walk-in and its projected use is best left to professionals, but it's important to note that a walk-in accessed frequently throughout the day will require a compressor with greater horsepower to maintain its interior temperature than one that is accessed seldom.

A 9-foot-square walk-in would need at least a 2-horsepower compressor. The condenser unit is located either on top of the walk-in (directly above the evaporator) or up to 25 feet away, with lines connecting it to the walk-in. The latter, for obvious reasons, is known as a remote system, and is necessary for larger-than-normal condensing units with capacities of up to 7.5 horsepower. In a remote system, the refrigerant must be added at the time of installation. For smaller walk-ins, there's also a plumbing configuration called a quick-couple system, which is shipped from the factory fully charged with refrigerant. This definitely simplifies installation. However, you may need the added power of a remote system if your kitchen has any of these drains on the walk-in's cooling ability: frequent door opening, glass display doors, multiple doors per compartment, or an ambient kitchen temperature that's near 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

Modern walk-ins sometimes offer a frozen-food section in addition to the regular cooler space. There are pros and cons to this concept. It may ease the load on the freezer, because it's already located inside a chilled airspace; but it also can't help but reduce overall usable space, because it requires a separate door. You can also order your walk-in with a separate, reach-in section that has its own door and shelves. Although this may save the cost of purchasing a separate reach-in, some critics claim that a walk-in is not designed to do a reach-in job, such as storing uncovered desserts. Do you really want them in the same environment as cartons of lettuce and other bulk storage items? There may be cleanliness or food quality factors to consider.

The doors should open out, not into the cooler itself. The standard door opening is 34 by 78 inches. Several door features are important for proper walk-in operation. These include: A heavy-duty door closer. Self-closing, cam-lift door hinges. If the door can be opened past a 90-degree angle, the cam will hold it open. A heavy-duty stainless steel threshold. This is installed over the galvanized channel of the door frame. A pull-type door handle, with both a cylinder door lock and room to use a separate padlock if necessary. Pressure-sensitive vents, which prevent vacuum buildup when opening and closing the door. An interior safety release so no one can be (accidentally or otherwise) locked inside the cooler.

Other smart features that can be ordered for walk-ins are: A thermometer (designed for outdoor use, but mounted inside the cooler) with a range of 40 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit. A monitoring and recording system that keeps a printout of refrigeration temperature or downloads to a computer. Glass, full-length door panels (like those in supermarkets and convenience stores), sometimes called merchandising doors, either hinged or sliding. Heavy-duty plastic strip curtains inside the door. (One manufacturer claims a 40 percent energy savings with this feature.)

A foot treadle, which enables you to open the door by pressing on a pedal or lever with your foot when both hands are full. Three-way interior lighting, which can be turned on from outside or inside the cooler, with a light-on indicator light outside. Inside, the light itself should be a vapor-proof bulb with an unbreakable globe and shield. When space is at a premium, think about whether it is practical to install an outdoor walk-in unit. This is an economical way to add space without increasing the size of your kitchen, and you can purchase ready-to-use, stand-alone structures with electricity and refrigeration systems in place. They come in standard sizes from 8 to 12 feet wide and up to 50 feet in length, in 1-foot increments.

They range in height from 7.5 to 9.5 feet. Look for a unit with a slanted, weatherproof roof, a weather hood, and a fully insulated floor. Outdoor walk-ins cost about half of the price of installing an indoor kitchen walk-in, so this is a money-saving idea if it works in your location. If your demands for walk-in space are seasonal, consider leasing a refrigerated trailer, available in most metropolitan areas on a weekly or monthly basis. They can provide an instant 2000 cubic feet of additional storage space, which can be kept at any temperature from 40 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit. They use basic 60-amp, 230-volt, three-phase electricity. Ask if the lease agreement includes hookup at your site and service if anything goes wrong.

5 Must Have Power Tools for Every Toolbox

With so many power tool options on the market today, it can be quite difficult to sort out what you truly need from what you think you need (or want). Whether you've been building and woodworking for dozens of years, or are a new homeowner in need of a few power tools to fill your toolbox and complete some minor repairs and projects around the house, the latest such tools can make even the most seasoned professional squirm. In order to help you sort the "needs" from the "don't needs", we've compiled a list of the Top 5 Power Tools for Every Toolbox:

18 Volt Power Tools

1. Drill and Driver Combo- a handheld, triggered power tool with a gripping chuck that rotates while attached to either a drill bit (metal rod with spiraling grooves used to bore holes), or an attachment to hold either a phillips-head (X-shaped tip) or flat edged screwdriver bit. This combination allows anyone to drill a hole, anchor a wall and hang a picture, shelf, or curtain in no time flat.

18 Volt Power Tools

2. Circular Saw- a heavy-duty cutting tool that uses round (circular) blades with saw teeth around the outside edge. This blade rotates on a spindle and can be easily changed to cut just about any surface, from masonry to wood to metal. Since the blade is significantly larder than a jigsaw (and usually cuts much faster), a circular saw is typically used for rough or straight-line cutting larger objects. This power tool is available in both a hand-held and table-mounted (stationary) versions to suit your specific needs.

3. Jigsaw- This classic power tool is used for cutting sharp curves, points, or complex patterns into a piece of wood or other type of surface. The thin blade of a jigsaw moves up and down, yielding the flexibility necessary to cut stenciled design and other patterns as details for any project.

4. Laser Level- Even though some may argue that such a tool is not "power" by definition, the laser portion of the tool does in fact require power to work. The primary difference between this type of level and a spirit and/or pendulum style is the laser's precision accuracy in indicating the leveled line against a surface.

5. Impact Wrench- This power tool is commonly used to tighten and loosen nuts and bolts on a variety of everyday items. It uses electricity or air in which repeated blows of tiny hammers generate torque to tighten (or loosen) such fasteners. Instead of the more common hand-held wrench, an impact wrench will add longevity to all of your projects and household items. Instead of consistently tightening nuts and bolts that loosen up over time, an impact wrench will securely tighten them the first time, alleviating any concerns of losing bolts and someone being injured in the process.

New Hedge Trimmer - Information and Advice

Hedge trimmers are available in numerous different styles and sizes, in this article we are going to explain some advantages of the most popular types on offer.

18 Volt Power Tools

There are two types of electric hedge trimmer available, the first type is one where you will need an electric extension cable to operate the trimmer. If you have a large garden hedge that needs trimming then this type is considered to be the best electric trimmer to use, but there is a safety consideration when using an electric trimmer with an extension cable. You should always make sure the cable is not tangled up in the hedge where you are cutting, people have been known to cut through the cable by accident, always try to make sure the cable is on the floor behind you when cutting your hedge.

18 Volt Power Tools

The other type of electric hedge trimmer is the battery operated type, these are known as cordless hedge trimmers and are extremely useful for cutting in those hard to get to places. You can get this type with a 12 volt battery which on one full charge will probably give you about 45 minutes of cutting time, this length of time will alter depending on the thickness of the branches you are cutting. With a battery powered hedge trimmer you can cut up to eight millimeter thick branches when cutting your garden hedge. The one big advantage with a battery operated hedge trimmer is that you will not have any electric cable lying around for you to cut in to, and being very light is easy to use when reaching over the top of your hedge.

There is another type of cordless trimmer this is the petrol or gas type, these can be reasonably heavy to use and produce some noise when in operation. Landscape gardeners tend to use this type because of the power they provide in cutting branches 3/4" thick with ease, if you have a big garden hedge with thick branches then you should look at a petrol type as an option for cutting your hedge. But for the average garden hedge the cordless hedge trimmers are extremely capable of producing a great looking hedge in a reasonably quick time, one consideration is that petrol hedge trimmers are more expensive than the electric type trimmers due to the engine required and the more robust nature of the trimmers.

One thing you should always remember to do when you have purchased your trimmer no matter which types you choose, this is to read the manufactures safety operation guides carefully they are there to help protect you from any unwanted incidents with your hedge trimmer.

If your garden hedge is higher than you can reach and you are not comfortable working of ladders then there is a solution, there is a long reach type of trimmer you can buy which can be cordless if that is what you want. These are excellent for reaching those high spots in your hedge, they are capable of giving you an extra 1.5 metres in reach to cut your hedge. They are also good for cutting low down branches in your hedge, this means you can cut the branches without bending your back.

I hope this article has given you information you can use to go purchase your new hedge trimmer, and enjoy trimming your garden hedge so it looks amazing.

Hitachi Drill Review - Should You Invest in a Hitachi?

How does the Hitachi drill stack up when compared with others out there? They sell a number of different models, and here is a look at three of their most popular.

18 Volt Power Tools

D6SH

18 Volt Power Tools

This Hitachi Drill comes with forty five hundred revolutions per minute capability, and is more powerful than its' predecessor, which was also larger and harder to maneuver. The engine is quite strong, capable of producing two hundred and forty watts, and the chuck is keyed. This actually makes it more difficult to change bits, something to consider.

The chuck is six and half millimeters, and the overall length of the model is just over two hundred millimeters. The drill as a whole weighs less than one kilogram, making it very easy to operate. It is capable of drilling through six and a half millimeters of steel and nine millimeters of wood. On the whole, this is a highly effective piece of machinery.

SFH 144-A

This one is quite pricey, selling for over four hundred and fifty dollars. It doesn't weight very much, and is very strong and durable. The completely metal gears allow it to last longer than usual.

DS18DFL 18

The is another one of the most popular Hitachi Drills. It comes with a one and a half battery that can be used gain and again, as many as fifteen hundred times before requiring a replacement.

Since the battery is somewhat unique, it actually causes the drill to weigh some forty percent less than comparable drills. The best part is, should you own other models made by Hitachi, it can be used for those as well, meaning you don't have to buy a separate battery and waste money.

The motor is capable of producing three hundred and seventy four inches per pounds of torque, which enables it to handle just about any task you tackle without breaking a sweat. The transmission is two speed, and you can go all the way to twelve hundred revolutions per minute if you need to.

The best part about this Hitachi drill is the fact that it is much smaller, as it weighs in at under four pounds. The chuck doesn't require a key like the D6SH, which is important for being able to change the bits fast, and the clutch has twenty two different levels.

That's all well and good, but these are just the company specifications-what do the consumers have to say about it? The machines actually receive plenty of positive reviews from customers, most of them raving about the ample power supply, particularly when compared with its' competitors.

I would suggest you only buy these models from websites that offer it with a one month money back guarantee, and two B fourteen batteries. On the whole, the Hitachi Drill models are highly recommended.

Makita Cordless Drills Bring Comfort to Most Drilling Jobs

Not every drilling tool is the same. In the design and physical attributes alone, there is much to differ-from the case material to its handle, from the built to its length. It's pretty hard to determine which of them is best since every boring, repair, or drilling job has specific needs.

Right now, I'm very interested about cordless drills since it's more convenient and efficient when it comes to power and electricity conservation. One brand that stands out from the rest is the Makita cordless drill. It does not only carry a topnotch design, but it's a tool that's very comfortable to use making it an ideal drill for jobs that eat up long hours.

Whether you're a DIY or a pro, this tool will make every work easier and more pleasurable. I don't even need to put in much strength as I drill since it's power and torque is enough to pass through the hard wood-with no funny movements.

It's time to say goodbye to annoying cables and cords that limit us in moving while we work. Since cordless drills were introduced to the market, life has been easier-literally! And it allows me to move from place to place without worrying about where to plug the cord.

Other brands are really heavy and I really don't like the bulky feeling while holding it. Glad to know that Makita cordless drill is different. It has a slimmer body that is slightly angled forward so it feels comfortable when you hold it. With its rubber material grip and lighter weight, it does not strain the hand and muscles at the end of every work. The balance of its body is really a great advantage and I can work comfortably even angles that are quite awkward to reach.

It is very powerful that even when I'm working on a rigid wood, it smoothly passes through it like a piece of cake. Working with Makita cordless drill gives you a brilliant drilling experience-it features the "Shift Lock Drive" in which I can switch it from "drilling" to "driving "mode with no difficulties. Since it's locked, you can't accidentally switch it back to the previous mode.

Makita cordless drill comes in a complete kit that suits everyone's specific needs. Included in the pack are two batteries that you can switch for back-up (especially important in a huge project), case, and brushes so it's easy to maintain the tool and prevent dust and other foreign materials from accumulating inside.
