My Personal Review Of The Dewalt DCD970KL Cordless Drill Kit

Recently my father-in-law's cordless drill stopped working and he asked me to help choose a new one. I thought that was rather odd as I'm only his helper when he remodels houses. I mean, I never really paid a lot of attention to cordless drills even though I used them quite a bit while working with him. To me, a drill was just that... a drill. Nothing special... or so I thought. Regardless, I decided to do some research to help him with making the right choice.

18 Volt Power Tools

There's so much to cordless drills than I imagined and as I result, I've decided to put together a short list of why he should purchase the Dewalt DCD970KL 18-Volt XRP Lithium-Ion 1/2-Inch Hammerdrill/Drill/Driver Kit.

Number of Volts

Choosing a drill with the right number of volts is important. The higher number of volts, the faster the motor spins which translates to MORE POWER!!!! The Dewalt DC970KL is 18v (volts) which make it very powerful, yet lightweight at 5 ¼ pounds so your arm won't be worn out at the end of the day.

Ah c'mon... dead already?

The Dewalt DCD970KL utilizes a nano-phosphate formula lithium-ion durable batteries. Compared to the outdated NiCad battery, the ... lithium-ion battery can be recharged up to 2000 times and give the Dewalt drill more than 40 percent run time.

The Bigger The Chuck, The Better...

Along with a new ergonomic grip and 360-degree side handle, the Dewalt DCD970KL has a ½ self-tightening keyless chuck that enables a sure grip throughout the operation of the drill - this ensures you stay on point and cuts down dramatically on slippage that leads to poor jobs.

Triple SpeedRanges

Bye, bye dual-speed ranges... let's welcome this 3-speed powerhouse. For fast application speed and improved run time, Dewalt equipped this drill with a 3-speed, all-metal transmission that helps in making precise hole placement and it gets through the material (wood, concrete, etc.) with ease and speed. You control the speed ranges, adjusting as the need requires.

More Power, baby...

This lightweight, compact drill packs a serious punch. Its high efficiency motor delivers 450 unit watts out of maximum power for superior performance in all drilling and fastening applications. This is perfect for fastening a light fixture to a concrete wall.

The Cost?

The DEWALT DCD970KL 18-Volt XRP Lithium-Ion 1/2-Inch Hammerdrill/Drill/Driver Kit is available for under 0. You certainly should not be paying more than 0 for this drill.

Setting Up Shop - Hand Power Tools

In this article we'll be discussing power hand tools and which ones you need to get started woodworking. I'll also throw in a few "nice to have but not necessary tools" (and my wife said I couldn't say "not necessary tools" together in one sentence, I don't really mean it, I just said it).

18 Volt Power Tools

1/2 - 2 Hp Router- This tool is such a work horse in my shop that I couldn't imagine getting along without it. The router is the king of versatility in the shop. A router can perform a variety of shaping operations using different bits. You can make your own mouldings, put a decorative edge on a table top, or round over an edge. Your options are only limited by your imagination. The router can also handle joinery, mortising, edge jointing, pattern routing, and inlay work. Adding all these options together you can quickly see why I rarely build a project without the router involved in the process.

18 Volt Power Tools

Jigsaw- This is a great tool to have for cutting curves, circles, trimming, and crosscutting parts. A coping saw can do the job also, it just takes longer. And if you have a lot of curves to cut out you'll appreciate having a jigsaw.

Circular Saw- Just as the jigsaw shines in cutting curves, the circular saw's claim to fame is in cutting straight lines. I use a circular saw to trim down large sheet goods before I take them to the tablesaw. A circular saw is also great at crosscutting pieces that are too large to maneuver on the tablesaw. With the proper blade and a straight edge, the circular saw can do most things that a tablesaw can do.

Orbital or Random-Orbit Sanders- Sanding is probably the least liked activity in woodworking. Whenever I can save time and effort in the sanding process I will. And the best way to do this especially on flat surfaces, is with a random-orbit sander. I prefer the random-orbit to the orbit sander because it leaves a less noticeable scratch pattern.

Cordless Drill- This is a tool I use almost everyday. It's much more convenient to use than a corded drill. There are so many sizes and brands out on the market today that it can be mind blowing. The first thing to consider is what you'll be doing with it. For household repair and general woodworking, I think a 12 - 14 volt size is plenty. Weight becomes a big factor after you get up above 14 volts. It seems that woodworking magazines have an article every other month on cordless drills. Check these out and see which ones test better. Surprisingly, some 12 volts compare to 14 volts in torque and number of holes drilled, as do some 14 to 18 volt comparisons.

There are other tools that you may want to add later on, like a belt sander, a biscuit jointer, a 3 Hp router for a router table. An air compressor with a brad nailer would be nice, but the tools listed above are what I would consider the essentials. Remember, to always use your common sense when using any power tool. If it feels unsafe, don't do it. Read the manufacturer's instructions before using any tool. Some of these tools are very loud so use hearing protection. And as always wear safety glasses at all times in the shop.

Advantages of a Cordless Circular Saw Vs A Corded One

Many people ask what the difference is between a cordless circular saw and one that has a cord on it, such as a corded circular saw. Beyond the obvious there is not a whole lot of difference between the two. There is one very noticeable difference that you will be able to notice when using a cordless circular saw. This difference is simply a matter of reduced power. Nobody has been able to make a battery pack that is able to compete with the power that you get from a circular saw with a cord. 18 volts is a far cry from the standard 120 volts you receive from an outlet. There have been cordless tools on the job for quite a few years; everything from screwdrivers to drills. When you mention the words cordless circular saw many people will be quick to look at you like you have lost your mind; the two just don't mesh well due to the fact that a cordless tool lacks sufficient power and everyone knows that to be true.

18 Volt Power Tools

There is a time and place for a cordless circular saw, this place is not designed to build an entire house with them, but they will work for small projects around the house. Let's be real until there is a way to place all of the 120 volts of a corded circular saw into the size of an 18 volt battery pack, a cordless circular saw will be at a distinct disadvantage in the way of power.

18 Volt Power Tools

All of that being said there are advancements that have been made on a cordless circular saw that many of the corded versions are not up to speed with. One of these is the side blower; this is designed in order to keep the cutting line clear of any debris that tends to cover up the cutting line when you are in the process of cutting a straight line. In addition there is the fact that the adjustments can be made on the fly as you are in the middle of a project. There is no longer a time that you have to take a lot of time away from the project that you are working on.

Using a cordless circular saw is sometimes a little tricky as there is a lot of difference in the way that the saw performs on a regular basis. No matter the brand that you are partial (i.e. the Bosch Circular Saw ) to there is sure to be a saw that is right for you and your needs. Many of the brands out there offer a lot in the way of features that allow a person ease of use. A cordless circular saw is one that will make a difference in the way that you look at a project again.

While a cordless circular saw is not right for every situation that is out there, they make the perfect tool for smaller projects. These projects are the ones that you don't want to risk cutting your cord on a small project. This is when you grab your battery pack and go to town on the project. If you are not in a massive hurry to get that doghouse built then this is the saw for you to use. A cordless circular saw has it's place on the job site, and with a little bit of respect you will be able to use it for many of the jobs that you need to do.

Charging Your Electric Car

You might be thinking of buying one of those new-fangled electric cars, and may be wondering how they're charged. That depends on which car you buy. The three main electric cars (electric vehicles or "EVs") currently available for middle income families are the Toyota Prius, Chevy Volt, and Nissan Leaf.

18 Volt Power Tools

Toyota Prius. Let's say you buy a Toyota Prius. The Prius is a "hybrid." A hybrid isn't fully electric. It runs on electricity generated by a battery until the battery is depleted. Then, it turns to burning gasoline. In the case of the Prius, a 2010 model drives about 12 miles on a fully charged battery. But the Prius is continuously recharging the battery with a mechanism triggered by stepping on the brakes.

18 Volt Power Tools

On the downside, the Prius currently doesn't come with a "plug in" option. That means you can't plug it into an electric outlet to charge its battery. However, Toyota is partnering with the EV company, Tesla, to develop a plug-in model that will be available in 2012.

Chevy Volt. The Chevy Volt, which started deliveries in the U.S. in December 2010, is also a hybrid. Unlike the Prius, the battery is not charged when you brake, but by plugging into the electric grid. It has a range of around 35 miles before it must start burning gasoline.

Nissan Leaf. The Nissan Leaf is currently the only all-electric EV available for middle income families. It can't burn gasoline, but runs only on its battery. It has a range of about 100 miles before you need to start looking for an electric outlet.

HOW DO YOU CHARGE A PLUG-IN ELECTRIC CAR?

Level 1 Charging. Both the Chevy Volt and Nissan Leaf come with a charging cord, called a "Level 1 Charger," as standard equipment. It looks like an extension cord. You can charge your car by plugging the Level 1 Charger into an electrical outlet in your garage or carport.

The advantage of Level 1 charging is that it's simple and inexpensive to set up. Hire an electrician to install an outlet in your garage or carport. It will need to be on a dedicated circuit, meaning that no other appliances, like a washer, for example, are on the same circuit. The outlet will need to be the safety version usual in garages and outdoors (a GFI). Also, your electrician will need to check whether your electrical panel should be upgraded in size to handle the increased power demand.

Once the outlet is installed, the EV driver pulls out the Level 1 charging cord that comes with the car, starts charging, and lets the car sit... for a long time. A Chevy Volt battery takes 10 hours from empty to full; a Nissan Leaf takes 20 hours.

Even though Level 1 charging is slow, drivers who have short commutes may be satisfied with it because, if they work it right, they won't start at empty. They'll have charge left in their batteries and will simply top off at night.

Here's how it can work. The 100-mile range of the Nissan Leaf is a lot more than the 33 miles the average American drives daily. If you drive the average 33 miles, you will use only one-third of the battery in a day. If you religiously plug in when arriving home, you will be able to top off at night and leave with a full charge in the morning.

For hybrids, like the Chevy Volt, the issue of leaving home fully charged is less pressing. At about 35 miles, when the battery hits empty, it turns to burning gas. This isn't good for gas usage, but on the other hand, the driver may suffer less from "range anxiety."

Level 2 Charging. While you may be able to make Level 1 charging work for you, you also have the option of faster charging by installing a special Level 2 Charger in your garage or carport. A Level 2 charger takes a Chevy Volt battery from completely empty to completely full in four hours; eight hours for the Nissan Leaf. So, even if you totally drain your battery, with a Level 2 Charger, you'll be able to fill it by morning.

A Level 2 charger requires 240 volts, which is more powerful than house current. A Level 2 Charger is housed in a container about 18 inches around and hangs on the garage wall, sticking out about a foot. When you recharge with a Level 2 charger, it looks very much like filling your tank with gas. You stretch a "hose" over to the recharging socket built into the EV.

A Level 2 Charger is usually purchased when you buy your electric car. If you wish, Nissan or Chevy can arrange the purchase and installation. Nissan has partnered with AeroVironment to supply and install chargers. Chevy Volt has partnered with SPX. When a Leaf, for example, is purchased, the Nissan dealer arranges for an AeroVironment electrical contractor to look over the new owner's garage, provide a bid, and do the installation.

The car buyer is free to look for a lower bid from an independent electrical contractor; however, warranties and follow-up repairs on the charger may not be as advantageous.

Consumer Reports estimates that purchase and installation of a Level 2 Charger costs about ,000. However, the price can vary quite a bit, depending on the distance of the charger from your electrical panel and on whether you need an upgrade of your panel size to accommodate the additional power demands of the charger.

THE FUTURE OF CHARGING YOUR ELECTRIC CAR

Level 3 chargers that can fully charge a Nissan Leaf in 15-30 minutes are currently available in Japan. However, they cost about ,000 installed. When they come to the U.S., they will most likely be installed for electric trucks, company fleets, or for private cars at shopping malls and at gas stations, where EVs will zip in and out to top off their batteries.

An even faster system is currently being installed in Israel. A Palo Alto company called "Better Place" is building a network of "carwashes." Only, when you drive your EV in, instead of getting a wash job, your spent battery is pulled out and within a couple of minutes, is replaced with a fully charged battery.

The pressure to be fully charged when leaving home will ease as chargers are increasingly installed in public places in the U.S. In my hometown, Los Angeles, Level 2 Chargers are already available in train stations, the main airport (LAX), the L.A. Convention Center, and other public places. One can easily find the network of existing public chargers on-line. In addition, malls will begin installing Level 2 or Level 3 Chargers as an inducement for shoppers and workplaces as an employment benefit.

In time, you'll be able to recharge your battery while you shop or work. While we're not there yet, we already have some workable charging options. You can buy a hybrid, like a Prius or Chevy Volt, top off your battery daily with the Level 1 Charger that comes free with your car, or for those with longer commutes or who want more convenience and back up, install a Level 2 Charger.

Diagnostic Scan Tools - Timing Lights and Test Probes

A responsible car owner will make the maintenance of his vehicle a priority. For fast and accurate servicing of the engine, a technician will require a set of diagnostic scanning tools. These tools will provide information on the status of the battery, fuel, ignition and emission systems of the vehicle. They would also check the mechanical conditions of the engine. While some testing is basic, which primarily ensures that the engine is sound; other examinations establish if the electrical and support systems are functioning smoothly.

18 Volt Power Tools

It is one such diagnostic scan tool, used to set the ignition timing and internal combustion engine of any vehicle. It helps determine whether or not the fuel system is plumbed correctly, its injectors are flowing cleanly with a good spray pattern and the sparkplug wires have been installed in the correct firing order.

18 Volt Power Tools

Timing marks indicate the current timing of the spark vis-à-vis the position of the piston in the ignition system. Identification of such marks helps to set the timing of the ignition system. If a timing light is attached to the ignition circuit while the engine is running, it can easily identify such timing marks.

The two test probes of the timing light need to be connected with the battery terminals as per the polarities. The trigger on the timing light plays the part of a switch. When it is pulled, it releases a beam every time the sparkplug fires.

There are a few different types of timing lights available in the market. The spark of the ignition itself powers the low-priced ones. These consist of two test probes of which one is clamped to the battery ground and other is inserted between the distributor cap and the sparkplug wire. They use a neon bulb, which may not be too bright and requires a dim lit utility area. However, this variety of time lights has no use in newer cars as they are composed of direct ignition systems.

Alternatively, other time lights, which powered by direct current can be used. These amplify the power from the battery of the vehicle to the bulb. This emits a very bright light, making it comfortable to use even in sunlight. The AC-powered timing light is similar to its DC-powered counterpart except that the former uses a 110-volt household power as a source.

Buying the Right Solar Panels

Do you know what to look for when you buying solar panels? If you are setting up a solar panel system for the first time, here are some tips on what to look for before you go shopping.

18 Volt Power Tools

First of all, you will need to calculate how much power you need to produce. If you are buying solar panels for your home, the best way to calculate this is to have a look at one years previous utility statements. It is important to do this because these statements will give you an idea of how much power you use over the different seasons.

18 Volt Power Tools

Let's assume you had a solar panel providing approximately 80 watts of power. If you charged the panel for 7 hours a day for 7 days, this would be 3920 watts of power, or enough to run a radio for 24 hours a day for 7 days. This may not sound like much, but of course you can have several panels for maximum power. Also, there are solar panels that provide more than 80 watts of power.

Besides taking into account how many panels you need, you have to consider where they will be placed. Sometimes if you have optimum placement for the solar panels, you can get away with less.

Solar power can also be used for boats, recreational vehicles and remote locations for generators, just to name a few, so you need to keep the application in mind when shopping for the panels. You can even get flexible panels, so depending on where they will be used, plan your requirements before going shopping.

Some of the other items that you will need when setting up a solar power system is an inverter, a charge controller and a battery. The inverter converts the raw DC current from the solar panel into AC current, which is what you need to run your household appliances. Charge controllers are devices used to protect batteries from damage due to overcharging. They limit the voltage and current delivered to a battery by the solar panels.

It's important to do your homework before buying your solar panels and all the accessories so that you don't spend more than you need but at the same time get the right amount of power for your needs.
